Policy pertaining to the collection of personal and non-personally-identifying information

The Sustainabilitist (“The Sustainabilitist“) operates and may operate other websites. It is The Sustainabilitist’s policy to respect your privacy regarding any information we may collect while operating our websites.

Website Visitors

Like most website operators, The Sustainabilitist collects non-personally-identifying information of the sort that web browsers and servers typically make available, such as the browser type, language preference, referring site, and the date and time of each visitor request. The Sustainabilitist’s purpose in collecting non-personally identifying information is to better understand how The Sustainabilitist’s visitors use its website. From time to time, The Sustainabilitist may release non-personally-identifying information in the aggregate, e.g., by publishing a report on trends in the usage of its website.

The Sustainabilitist also collects potentially personally-identifying information like Internet Protocol (IP) addresses for logged-in users and for users leaving comments on The Sustainabilitist only discloses logged-in user and commenter IP addresses under the same circumstances that it uses and discloses personally-identifying information as described below, except that commenter IP addresses and email addresses are visible and disclosed to the administrators of the pages where the comment was left.

Gathering of Personally-Identifying Information

Certain visitors to The Sustainabiltist’s websites choose to interact with The Sustainabilitist in ways that require The Sustainabiltist to gather personally-identifying information. The amount and type of information that The Sustainabilitist gathers depends on the nature of the interaction. For example, we ask visitors who sign up at to provide a username and email address. Those who engage in transactions with The Sustainabilitist are asked to provide additional information, including as necessary the personal and financial information required to process those transactions. Aggregated Statistics

The Sustainabilitist may collect anonymized statistics about the behavior of visitors to its websites (using tools such as Google Analytics). The Sustainabilitist may display this information publicly or provide it to others. However, The Sustainabilitist does not disclose personally-identifying information other than as described below.

Protection of Certain Personally-Identifying Information

The Sustainabilitist discloses potentially personally-identifying and personally-identifying information only to those of its employees, contractors and affiliated organizations that (i) need to know that information in order to process it on The Sustainabilitist’s behalf or to provide services available at The Sustainabilitist’s websites, and (ii) that have agreed not to disclose it to others. A cookie is a string of information that a website stores on a visitor’s computer, and that the visitor’s browser provides to the website each time the visitor returns. The Sustainabilitist uses cookies to help The Sustainabilitist identify and track visitors, their usage of The Sustainabilitist website, and their website access preferences. Anti-Spam Compliance

In compliance with the CAN-SPAM Act and the CASL legislation, all email sent from The Sustainabilitist will clearly specify the sender of the email, and provide clear information on how to contact the sender. In addition, each email message will also contain, at its bottom, concise information on how to manage or opt-out from The Sustainabilitist's mailing list, so that only relevant email messages from The Sustainabilitist will be delivered.

Collected Personal Data


When visitors leave comments on the site, The Sustainabilitist collects the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string. An automated spam detection system then runs through these data, in order to filter out spam comments from well-intended comments.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Contact forms

If you submit information to The Sustainabilitist through one of the contact forms on, then those informations will be forwarded to The Sustainabilitist's email system. The Sustainabilitist generally only gathers information for communicational and administrative purposes, all of the while maintaining a policy of periodically removing emails which are no longer relevant or useful.


If you leave a comment on, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for up to one year—or the time they are deleted from your browser.

If you visit login page, The Sustainabilitist will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, The Sustainabilitist will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select "Remember Me", your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded Content From Other Websites

Articles on may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Duration of Data Retention

If you leave a comment on, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so that The Sustainabilitist can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically—instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on, The Sustainabilitist also stores the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

Rights on Personal Data

If you have an account on, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data The Sustainabilitist holds about you, including any data you have provided to The Sustainabilitist. You can also request that The Sustainabilitist erase any personal data The Sustainabilitist holds about you. This does not include any data The Sustainabilitist is obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Business Transfers

If The Sustainabilitist, or substantially all of its assets, were acquired, or in the unlikely event that The Sustainabilitist goes out of business or enters bankruptcy, user information would be one of the assets that is transferred or acquired by a third party. You acknowledge that such transfers may occur, and that any acquirer of The Sustainabilitist may continue to use your personal information as set forth in this policy.

Privacy Policy Changes

Although most changes are likely to be minor, The Sustainabilitist may change its Privacy Policy from time to time, and in The Sustainabilitist’s sole discretion. The Sustainabilitist encourages visitors to frequently check this page for any changes to its Privacy Policy. If you have a account, you might also receive an alert informing you of these changes.
